Is this sermon about the dangers of having a potty-mouth? No. If we have to have that talk, this would be a sermon on Matthew 15:18. This is a message about change. Sometimes, change is a bad word to us. We are afraid of it, don’t understand it and we’re comfortable the way we are; but change is the basic truth of life. You and I are living in the middle of a seismic change in our country. For as long as we have been alive (you and I), the country has always believed that the church had the market cornered on morality and virtue. Even people who wouldn't be bothered with all the rules of church typically thought church a good thing, but no more. The Christian faith is moving to the margins. Today, the average American no longer thinks of Christians as moral people. We are backwards, superstitious, malevolent, bigoted, and hateful. This perception is being fueled by the antics of a few truly disturbing groups, but it is working. Tonight we will tackle two questions at once, asked by different people: Christians who drink say that it is ok because Jesus did, and he even created wine (John 2:1-11). So is drinking ok? What was the alcohol content? I’ve done some study on this and it is really confusing. Plus, commentaries seem to differ from each other. I am not really sure this is a qualifying question for the sermon series. Here it goes. Why is drinking a beer or alcoholic drink considered a sin among church members.
