Living By Faith; Wait For It…
By: Dennis Baker
Series: Our Identity in Christ
Hebrews 11:8-16
We live in a society filled with people who want it all, now, today, or even yesterday. Because this is true, we have trouble with a basic truth about faith; Some of what we receive by faith will not be experienced until we leave this life. As Paul says, “but if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with patience Romans 8:25).

Nahum 1:1-15
Jealousy is seen as a negative character trait or emotion. Usually, in humans that is true, because we don’t know the way we should act as a result. God created that emotion and often He is described as our title says. The difference is that God always acts in a way that is appropriate. - Jul 23, 2017Faith: It’s How You Look At It

Hebrews 11:7-12
How we look at all of life is directed by our meta-narrative. Meta-narrative is our big story…the driving direction of our lives. If we have Christ at our core, then everything will reflect that point of view. Most people have themselves at their core. Hence, everything will reflect that point of view. - Jul 16, 2017The Saga of the Unhappy Servant

Jonah 4
Any preacher today would give up his full-size GMC Van with half a million miles on it, to have the type of response to his ministry that Jonah had to his. But as you might guess, such was not the case for Jonah. - Jul 16, 2017Essential Faith

Hebrew 11:1-6
Faith is trusting in something that is substantive, yet unseen. Unseen because sin has caused a separation between God and us. Substantive, because the God we seek is good and has created all we see. To please God and grow as children of God, believers know that faith is essential. - Jul 9, 2017Prayer

Since then he has fully committed his life to the ministry of the Word, working with both Adults and Teens. He and his wife Rachel, and their family of four live in Scappoose, OR where Wes has served as preaching minister for 14 years. Jul 9, 2017I am an Arab and I am a MuslimSeries: Our Identity in ChristI am Wissam, 37, an associate minister at Sunset church of Christ and a gospel preacher in Metro Detroit, MI. I was born and raised to a Sunni Muslim family in Baghdad, Iraq. I rejected Islam into atheism in the mid-1990's, found a copy of the Bible in '97, believed in '98 and it took me another 12 years before I could find someone to baptize me in May 2010.A graduate of the University of Baghdad, I worked as a civil engineer for 8 years after finishing my service as a Republican Guard. Then a Christian woman in the Amish country of Pennsylvania invited me to come to the U.S. I came in April 2011. Nine months later, I went to Sunset International Bible Institute in Lubbock, TX. I finished school and moved to Michigan by early 2014. I like reading, writing, and doing Bible studies. I teach in our church, at my house and other places on a regular basis. I dream of starting an Arab-speaking congregation of the Lord's church in Dearborn.

Jonah 3
The people of Nineveh were persuaded to listen to the message of Jonah. It seems, from what the text says, they got their lives right with God. This is encouraging to us, as we all have areas we need to grow in and the path to God is thesame for us as it was for the people of Nineveh. - Jul 2, 2017No Eye Has Seen

Hebrews 11:1-10
Faith is a profound human trait. We can’t live without it, yet we often deny that we have any. It takes as much faith to be an atheist as it does to be a theist. While it will not be admitted, most theories of how humans came to be, have gaps in their logic, faith is what fills them in. The beginning of faith recognizes that God created the world we experience. - Jun 25, 2017The Messiah: Jesus or Mohammed?

Matthew 24:23-28
I have been looking forward to hearing what Wissam has to say regarding his faith and his work. It seems that because of the terrorist tragedies carried out by people claiming to be Islamic, to hear from somebody like Wissam is a rare opportunity. In personal preparation, I have been reading up on Islam, including doing some reading from the Koran. The message this evening will focus on Islam’s view of Jesus. - Jun 25, 2017Worship: Enhanced with Entertainment

Hebrews 13:1-3
The Bible tells us that we should pursue entertainment. In fact, hospitality, (entertaining strangers) is consistently mentioned in the Bible (both old and new testament). It's a requirement of elders. It's a command for every member and yet, we often dismiss these ideas by saying not everyone is an extrovert/has a big house/has extra money for it. If we get this down - learning hospitality - it will affect everything about how we connect as a church and it will transform Sunday mornings. A church committed to hospitality will make transform worship into sweet time of reunion and belonging. Yes! Your worship needs a little entertainment. - Jun 18, 2017The Man as an Image Bearer

Genesis 18:17-19
Though few of us want to admit it, a lot of who we are is wrapped up into who our fathers are. Who was your father? Was he a man of character? Was he gentle or angry or distant? Impossible to please? Yes. He's affected a significant part of who you are today. In ancient times, the Jews understood their confession "Abraham is our father" was central to their identity as people of the promise. The same is true of all of us. Dads play a huge role in our self identity, self confidence, and self loathing. Dads always make an impression on their kids. So let's do it on purpose. - Jun 11, 2017Hopefully It Won’t Take A Large Fish

Jonah 3:1-4
God gave Jonah a task and his response was something like you might see in God’s people today. God says “go” and we say “no.” When Jonah said “no”, God gave him a second chance, which was not so pleasant. It was effective, however. - Jun 11, 2017More Than We Can Handle

2 Corinthians 4:7-15
When Jesus walked this earth, He made a statement that we often forget, or we miss when we are reading it. He says, “in this world you will have suffering…” This statement should prepare us for what to expect in this life. We can not run or hide from this fact. But we can pursue peace. - Jun 4, 2017The Great Confession

Matthew 16:13-33
The question that Jesus asks His disciples, which is recorded in this passage, is the most important question in Scripture. The answer determines the focus of your life and the depth of your commitment. If Jesus really is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God, then having Him as Lord of my life is transformational. - Jun 4, 2017Faith of Earth

Daniel 7:13-14
Life can be pretty lame. Suffering in the world and among the church is not on the decline. It can be demoralizing and disheartening and cause us to lose our joy. Yet God does not want us to live sad lives, but hopeful ones. This morning we'll explore what Daniel's vision means for God's people when they encounter hard times. - May 28, 2017God Shall be Found Faithful

Judges 14-16
Samson is a mixed bag and there's no way around it. His exploits bounce all over, from illicit romance and marriage, to prostitution; from bets and brawls to enraged vengeance. It's actually tough to find anything in Samson's judgeship that is praiseworthy, and yet, God called him and God used him. I'm convinced that God used Samson, not because of his faithful behavior; but in spite of his faithless behavior. - May 28, 2017Getting to the Core of Who We Are

Colossians 3:1-4
Sometimes life really gets us down. The difficult situations we face cause such grief and pain. Sometimes we cause a lot of grief and pain. It’s not just the pain, but there is also confusion. When we love someone and they leave, it seems inconsistent with the principals of life. Something tells us it’s not right, it doesn’t feel right. Why is that?
